Community Outreach
Highland either funds and/or has members involved in many community ministries. These include (in alphabetical order):

Highland and Temple Emmanuel have joined together to Adopt A Street, a stretch of Cloverdale Avenue, through the Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful department. Volunteers from both congregations pick up trash along the roads surrounding our properties and some adjacent roads. Anyone age 16 or older who would like to volunteer is welcome. Please contact Kelly Greene to find out more.

AIDS Care Service - empowering and serving those in our community living with HIV/AIDS and educating our community in the struggle against the disease.

Bethesda Center - providing shelter for homeless men and women through a day shelter and an emergency night shelter.

CareNet Counseling, Inc. - is a non-profit agency which provides a full range of counseling services to the public. Formally known as the outpatient Pastoral Counseling Services of North Carolina Baptist Hospital, CareNet is the only faith-integrated, nationally accredited counseling service in the Triad.

CHANGE - Communities Helping All Neighbors Gain Empowerment - providing a space for residents of Forsyth Co. to participate in our democracy and public life focusing on the problem areas of Youth and Education, Jobs and Economic Development, Quality Affordable Health Care, Quality Housing and Neighborhoods, Reinventing Local Government.

Community Care Center - Volunteers providing free or reduced-fee medical and dental care to low-income, uninsured families in Forsyth, Stokes and Davie counties.

Contact Reassurance and Rape Hotline - offering free daily personal, outbound phone calls to isolated older adults or other homebound persons in our community who wish to live independently. Contact also continues to offer a confidential, inbound rape hotline supported by well-trained volunteers. Find out more on the Family Services website.

Crisis Control Ministry - a Christian-based ministry assisting people in crisis to meet essential life needs and to become self-sufficient.

Disability Advocates of NWNC - a ministry serving the severely disabled in our community through skilled legal advocates helping the disabled obtain Social Security and Medicaid benefits.

Family Services Domestic Violence Shelter - assisting women, children and men who are victims of sexual assault or domestic violence.

Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry - providing Christian Ministry, counseling and re-entry guidance to the incarcerated in our area.

Habitat for Humanity - building quality homes in safe neighborhoods for qualifying families who meet income and work history requirements. Highland has participated in four interracial-interfaith habitat builds (Unity Builds) - in 2000, honoring Highland's 50th anniversary, 2002, 2006 and 2009. Presbyterian Campus Ministry - ministering with and among the students and faculty at our local institutions: North Carolina School for the Arts, Salem College, Wake Forest University and Winston Salem State University.

Presbyterian Interracial Dialogue - offers members of our six Presbyterian churches in Winston-Salem the opportunity to explore our common Christian bonds across racial lines. The purpose is to gain a greater understanding of the impact of racism in our own lives, make good friends across racial lines, and to make a positive witness in our city of the possibilities of reconciliation. Prodigals Community - serving those struggling to overcome addictions to drugs and alcohol through a residential treatment facility with an emphasis on spiritual growth.

Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center - providing quality, professional equine assisted activities for both children and adults. Equine assisted activities help to improve muscle tone, balance, posture, coordination and motor development as well as emotional well being.

Samaritan Ministries - providing Christian ministry while serving the hungry, homeless, and people in need through a soup kitchen, men's shelter and residential substance abuse recovery program for men.

Second Harvest Food Bank - reducing hunger and malnutrition in northwest NC by sharing the abundance so no one goes hungry.

Senior Services - coordinating and overseeing in-home services, as well as offering direct services for seniors, enabling them to live with dignity and remain at home for as long as possible; serving as an information and referral source for seniors, and providing adult day care services.

Shepherd's Center - an interfaith ministry promoting and providing volunteer opportunities, life-long learning and support programs for older adults.

Sunnyside Ministry - A Christian based ministry (focused on clients in the 27107 and 27127 zip codes) providing families with emergency assistance for life’s basic needs.

Trinity Center - an ecumenical center for counseling, spiritual formation and education, fostering healing and wholeness, and serving a diverse client population that includes men, women, children, adolescents, single people, married couples, professionals and those who are unemployed.

Winston Salem Rescue Mission - a non-profit, non-denominational, Christ-centered ministry established as a response to hundreds of homeless men wandering the streets of Winston-Salem. Since 1967, the Rescue Mission has been actively involved in meeting the physical, spiritual, emotional, and social needs of destitute people. Through programs offered, the Mission is able to reach out and effectively care for over 100 men each day, enriching men's lives with nurturing and recovery services.
