Ways We Care for Our World

Highland offers many ways for members to participate in God’s activity around the world.

On the first Sunday of each month we collect a Hunger Offering — pasta sauce for Crisis Control and 5 Cents a Meal for our Presbytery.

Once a year we receive our four PC(USA) offering:

  • One Great Hour of Sharing used to fight hunger, provide housing and for disaster relief; we receive on Easter. Learn more here.
  • Pentecost Offering helps children, youth and young adults at risk; we receive on Pentecost Sunday. Learn more here.
  • Peace & Global Witness Offering supports peacemaking initiatives and education programs; we receive on the first Sunday in October, World Communion Sunday. Learn more here.
  • Christmas Joy Offering providing congregations direct ways of supporting retired church workers and racial ethnic schools; we receive on the Sunday before Christmas. Learn more here.

Other world mission projects that Highland supports are:

  • Alternative Christmas Giving – In 2022, Highland’s Alternative Christmas Giving addressed housing crises locally and around the world, donating to Habitat for Humanity’s Home Repair Program, World Relief of the Triad (affordable housing for refugee families), Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (housing in FL after Hurricane Ian), and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (housing in Pakistan after catastrophic flooding).
  • Blankets + – is a special Church World Mission program providing warm blankets and funds to help people in need around the world, including the United States.
  • CROP Walk is an event for Church World Service which is an international relief, development, and refugee resettlement agency operating in over 80 countries, including the United States. While Church World Service is the primary beneficiary of the walk, Crisis Control Ministry and Sunnyside Ministry each receive a portion of the proceeds.
  • Presbyterian Campus Ministry – ministering with and among the students and faculty at our local institutions: North Carolina School for the Arts, Salem College, Wake Forest University and Winston Salem State University. Click here for a brief statement on Collegiate Ministry.
